A Three-Dimensional Scaffold for Heart Tissue Repair 2

The utmost goal of our research in tissue engineering is to be able to improve quality of life by replacing damaged or lost tissue function. The goal of this project is to develop a 3D structure for delivering new heart cells to replace those lost following a heart attack. In order to support the newly delivered heart cells, blood vessel ingrowth must occur. The 3D structure we developed has specific layers to address cell delivery, nutrient transport, and blood vessel ingrowth. By developing an implantable 3D structure that can replace lost heart cell and heart muscle function, a patient who has suffered a heart attack can have better heart pumping efficiency leading to a better quality of life.
