We recently developed a microscale human liver platform that stabilizes liver cells in vitro and allows us to model liver stage malaria in vitro. This image is of a malaria parasite that has infected a liver cell in an in vitro human microliver model and shows that applying oxygen levels that better mimic physiological oxygen levels can result in improved parasite growth in host cells in vitro, and hence result in better liver-stage malaria models for antimalarial drug development.
